Obituary for Reverend Janice Collins West
The Reverend Janice Collins West passed away on Monday, November 5, 2012 at AMC following a brief illness. She was born on April 20, 1922 in West Orange New Jersey, the daughter of the late Willard Lester and Dorothy Pierson Collins.
An accomplished cellist, impassioned math teacher, ordained UCC minister, devoted mother of five. Her sharp intellect and unique wit endured until the very last.
Janice earned a B.A. from Montclair State Teachers College 1943, was united in marriage to Richard F. West on August 21, 1948. She taught in New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. She earned a M.S. in Education from the University of Evansville 1968 and an M.Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary in 1981. She served churches in northern Illinois and preached regularly at Bridgeway of Bensenville Retirement Community until 2011.
Janice is survived by her sons: Rev. Mark (LuAnn) of Huntingburg, IN and Jeff (Denise Zabkiewicz), Vancouver, B.C.; daughters Susan West (Tim Wycoff), Appleton, WI, Carol West (George Rashid), Davenport, IA, and Margaret West (John Moran), Chicago, IL; grandchildren: Isaac Wycoff and Olivia Wycoff both of Portland, OR, Jonathan West of Littleton, CO, and Kate (Lang) Leichhardt, of Louisville, KY; and sister Carol C. Robinson, of Indialantic, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A Thanksgiving service followed by a Celebration of Life with Reverend Gordon Smith presiding will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Bethel United Church of Christ, 315 East Saint Charles Road, Elmhurst, IL.
