Donald James Massonette, age 88, died peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Prairie Home Assisted Living. Don fought a long battle with dementia, heart issues, and a number of strokes.
Don was a 1948 graduate of St. Mary Central High School in Menasha. Following graduation, he and 12 of his classmates enlisted in the United States Air Force. Don served as a draftsman/surveyor in the Northern Atlantic during the Korean Conflict. After his four-year enlistment, he stayed in the Air Force Reserves based out of Milwaukee. During that time he attended Lawrence College working toward a degree in business.
After leaving the Air Force, he worked in sales dealing in scientific equipment and in school supplies. In his later years, he worked at Walmart in Phoenix, AZ, in Appleton, WI, and in Darboy, WI; totaling 17 years.
Survivors include 1 son, David (Nancy) Massonette, Fox Crossing, WI; and 1 daughter, Amy Sabado, Olympia, WA; 5 grandchildren include Michael (Monica) Massonette, Rolesville, NC; Kari (Ben) Barrett, Idaho Falls, ID; Jonathan (Katie) Massonette, Menasha, WI; Kyla and Peyten Sabado, Olympia, WA; 8 great grandchildren. Survivors also include 5 step grandchildren: Scott (Vicki) LaFountain, Menasha, Michael LaFountain, Neenah, Jesse LaFountain, Palm Harbor, FL, Laurie (Bob) Davis, Menasha, and Jason (Kiara) LaFountain, Little Chute; 15 great step grandchildren and 3 great great step grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn J. Mielke, 2 children: Timothy and Caryn; his parents, Edwin and Marie Massonette; sister Arlene Lavery, brother-in-law Daniel Lavery, great grandchild Abram Barrett.
A graveside service will take place at 3 pm on Friday, June 28, at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Appleton, with complete military honors.
