Janet Louise (Hickcox) Ohlemacher

August 22, 1948 ~ February 27, 2018 (age 69)

Janet Louise (Hickcox) Ohlemacher was unexpectedly called home to heaven on Tuesday, February 27th, 2018. Janet was born on August 22nd, 1948 in Milwaukee Wisconsin to parents Nila Jane and Franklin Hickcox. A lifelong learner, she graduated from Custer High School in 1966 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from Barry University in Miami, FL, a Masters degree from Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, FL and as one of her proudest accomplishments, completed her Doctoral studies at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. She was surrounded by her entire family cheering on ‘Dr Grandma Jan’ at the doctoral hooding ceremony.

On January 24th, 1969 she married Roger Ohlemacher. They knew each other only a short time before knowing they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together and have provided a beautiful example of marriage full of love, compromise and commitment. Dad has lost his best friend and soulmate.

Jan was a lifelong educator with a career of teaching at all levels. As a teacher she touched the lives of a diverse student base, from elementary students to adult learners. As an administrator she was innovative in connecting students with post-secondary education opportunities. God led her to unique places where she combined her professional career with a commitment to outreach ministry, including spending several years of her career in the Wisconsin prison system. Throughout her various positions, she was drawn to mentoring and empowering women. She achieved her greatest professional accomplishment in reaching an Executive position at the collegiate level, which she retired from in 2015.

For Mom, the value she placed on family was only surpassed by the importance of her unwavering faith. She found great joy in hosting family gatherings and meals together, with card games and slide shows. Her definition of family included friends throughout the years that she and Dad crossed paths with and invited into their lives as family. She lived such a full life of humble giving and ministry, living fully so she could give fully.

Janet is survived by Roger, her loving husband of 49 years, three daughters: Amy (Dick) Ohlemacher-Lonetti of Buffalo, MN; Mia (Kris) Peterson of Menasha; Ivy (Dan) Wendland of Appleton; and her cherished grandchildren: Hayden, Brenden, Quinn, Zachary, Cade, Lily and Charlie. She is further survived by her sisters: Leslie (Joe) Theys and Laurie Hickcox, sisters-in-law: Nicole Hickcox and Linda Hickcox; nieces and nephews Sam, Lisa, Eric (Amanda), Emily, Jonathan, Joshua, Annaleese, Jakob, Izac, Brenna, and Noah. There are many other special relatives and friends that Mom loved through the years.

She was preceded in death by her mother, her father and step-mom Barbara Hickcox, and brothers: Luke, Richard and Bruce.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 8th from 4:00 – 6:00pm with a celebration of life service at 6:15 at Brettschneider Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel. Family and friends are also welcome to attend a graveside service to be held in early Spring in Minocqua. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions appreciated to an education scholarship fund that’s been established.

Mom and Dad were traveling in Florida at the time of her death; the family has been so blessed by many angels on earth who helped guide, comfort and support us in this unimaginable situation as we made our way home. Words cannot express our gratitude.
