On June 11th, 2019 Leo M. Hoppe passed away peacefully with his family by his side. His wife was holding his hand as he took his last breath. Leo fought a long fight to recover from injuries after being struck by a car January 2, 2018. After multiple surgeries from broken bones, he was fighting back, and learning to walk again. However, when doctors found stomach cancer in April, Leo lost his final battle.
He was born August 1st, 1937 in Steven’s Point to Antone & Leona Hoppe (Pasciak). Leo met his wife Peggy (Paessler) after he served in the Marine Corps. They had their 60th wedding anniversary February 7, 2019. Leo worked at Edgewater Paper Co. and Pickering & Pickering as a machinist. He furthered his career with Kimberly Clark as a millwright traveling to various work sites. Leo had early retirement from Boldt Construction after a knee injury while working at the nuclear plant in Two Rivers.
After retirement, he began bartending. He bartended at the V.F.W. for 18 years, as well as at the Appleton Moose Lodge #367. Leo rode his bicycle to work to bartend every day. He also bartended at the Appleton Elk’s Lodge and he was a member of the American Legion.
Leo enjoyed riding his bike and participated in races. He bowled on several leagues, shot pool, sang karaoke, and enjoyed feeding the birds in his backyard. Leo could make you laugh with a good joke. He also donated his time and cooked a special chicken dumpling soup, and a grilled cheese to go along with.
Leo was vibrant and active up until he was hit by the car.
