Raymond John Schreiter Jr.
91, Appleton, passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018 at Renaissance Assisted Living in Appleton. He was born on June 16, 1927 to the late Raymond Sr. and Ethel (Bentz) Schreiter. Ray was a faithful husband and devoted father. He graduated from St. Joseph grade school and attended St. Mary’s High School. He enlisted in the Army before his junior year and served his country honorably and proudly during WW II. When discharged he worked for the Fox River Paper Co. He met his future wife Rita Scheppler in 1949. They were the last couple married in the old Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Appleton on April 15, 1950.
The Catholic Church was very important in their lives. They were active in the ABC program for 2 years. Ray went to the Ecumenical counsel in Chicago at the 5th City for one week and made Cursillo. He was president of P.T.A., mass lecturer and commentator at Sacred Heart Parish. He conducted 30 day retreats and participated in a 16 week course on the Christian doctrine. While at Sacred Heart he taught religion for 10 years to high school senior boys.
As a member of St. Bernadette Parish, Ray became a Eucharistic Minister. With the help of Fr. Gulag he also created mini parishes and held Bible classes at each one. Ray was a great admirer of Fr. Rotz, the Biblical Scholar of Green Bay. Ray went to many of his lectures where he received his knowledge of leading bible lessons.
Ray worked at Wisconsin/Michigan Power Co., now called WE Energy, as a lineman for 38 ½ years.
Ray is survived by his 5 children: Rebecca Schreiter; Raymond (Judy) Schreiter III; Barbara (Dan) George; Elizabeth (Chuck) Cramer and Bernice (Robert) Patoka; 8 grandchildren: Eric (Amber), Sarah (Mike), Jesse, Joseph, Jay, Clayton, Cameron and Cooper; 3 great grandchildren: Caleb, Dylan and Ryan; brothers: Richard and John Schreiter, a sister Rita DeGroot and a sister-in-law Caryl Scheppler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Rita in 2004; brothers: Robert (Ruth) Schreiter; James (Lucy) Schreiter; Fr. Dan Schreiter and Clem (Esther) Schreiter; sisters: Marie (Bob) Laux and Barbara (Bob) Steger; sisters-in-law: Patricia, Mary Jane Schreiter, Marge (Len) Brasch and Bernice Scheppler; a brother-in-law Fred Scheppler.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, Dec. 17, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Appleton with Rev. James Leary O.F.M. Cap officiating. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Appleton. Friends may visit directly at church Monday from 9 – 10:30 AM followed by Mass and Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Ray’s name.
