Darrill J. Sommers, age 74, of Appleton passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022 surrounded by his loving family at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center Appleton. Darrill was born in New London, WI on September 7, 1947, to the late Martin and Lorraine (Scharmann) Sommers.
Darrill worked as a semi-truck driver for Kimberly Clark for most of his career as well as for Walmart. After retirement, he went on to work for Springhetti Landscaping. Darrill was an avid Lionel train collector and took pride in rebuilding his 1966 GTO. He also enjoyed going to train and car shows and was a NASCAR collector, especially Dale Earnhardt. Darrill was a jack-of-all-trades and loved spending his time outdoors where he was meticulous about his lawn and was always up for a challenging project. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and will be remembered for the Sommers family tradition of shake of the day with a round of old fashioneds.
He is survived by his 5 children: Lori McMyler of Columbus, OH, Brian Sommers of Wrightstown, WI, Jeffrey (Courtney) Sommers of Sydney, Australia, Christopher (Kellie) Sommers of Chicago, IL and Brooke Sommers of Appleton, WI; 6 grandchildren: Brenton McMyler, Nikole (Brent) Jansen, Collin Floyd, Lexus Sommers, Spencer Sommers and Charlie Sommers; 2 sisters: Betty (Dallas) Boelter of Appleton, WI and Eileen Norenberg of Panama City Beach, FL; and his significant other of 20 plus years, Judy Wallerman of Appleton, WI. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters: Muriel Ponders and Audrey Lathrop; his brother, Leroy Sommers; and grandson, Casey Sommers.
A memorial service will take place at 5pm on Friday, March 4th, at the Brettschneider Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit the family on Friday from 2 – 5pm until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
