Gary Leo Schommer, 62, of Appleton – loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all passed away on Friday, January 7th, 2022. Gary was born on March 18th, 1959, in Appleton to the late John and Marcella (Helein) Schommer. He graduated from Appleton East High School with the class of 77. On October 24th, 1981, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Polly Van Rooy. Gary worked at Appleton Papers (Apvion) for 41 years before retiring.
He enjoyed hunting and spending time up at the hunting shack with his son and grandsons. He loved fishing, grilling out, golfing, camping, lunch dates with his daughter and spending time up at Schwechlers Lake lot. Cruising on the mopeds with his wife to some of their favorite spots. His greatest love will always be the time he spent with his wife, family, and friends.
Gary is survived by his wife, Polly; his children, Mike (Katie) Schommer and Tara Schommer; his grandsons, Leo, Oliver and his grand-pup Miley; his beloved dog Alley; his siblings: Sandra (Larry) Russell, Daniel (Mary) Schommer, Bonnie (Frank) Dennee, Jacqueline (Dan) Sturm, Kevin (Sue) Schommer, Karla (Earl) Dennee, Tom Schommer and Amy (Greg) Schoettler; his in-laws: Barb and Jim Thiel, Connie Walbrun, Suzie (Jerry) Wollersheim, Pam Van Rooy, Debra and Randy Cook, Patrick and Kari Van Rooy, Mike and Debbie Van Rooy, Tony and Laura Van Rooy, and Jim and Julie Schwechler. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Marcella, brother Steve, sister-in-law Lisa Schommer. His father and mother-in-law Larry and Patricia Van Rooy, and his best friend Ken Foegen.
A Funeral Mass will take place at 12:15 pm on Friday, January 14th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 222 E. Fremont St., Appleton, with Father John Katamba officiating. Friends may visit at the church on Friday from 9 am until 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Gary’s name.
