Joyce Ione Neuman: Child of God, Wife, Mother, Grandma, Educator and Beautiful Woman, age 97, passed away Friday, February 5, 2021 at the Courtyards of Oshkosh.  She was born November 16, 1923 in Wittenberg, WI to the late Alfred and Julie (Gregerson) Thorson. At Wittenberg High School, she served as president of her senior class and graduated with honors.  In 1944, Joyce graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and pursued extensive graduate work. While in college, she was president of “Primary Council” and wrote two papers that were published by the state of Wisconsin.

Joyce was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Appleton, Wisconsin for over 50 years.  She enjoyed serving on the Church Council, as program chairman for LCW (Lutheran Church Woman) and the Education Committee as well as co-heading Vacation Bible School.

Professionally, Joyce taught school in Marshfield and Appleton for 27 years which she thoroughly enjoyed, touching the lives of hundreds of students. What an outstanding teacher, most especially in the area of providing a solid academic foundation for countless first through sixth grade students.  She was a member of the Outagamie County Retired Teachers and Huntley Elementary School Retired Teachers organizations.

On June 15, 1946, she married Virgil L. Neuman, her husband of 60 years.  They were blessed with 7 children: Brian (Rebecca), Diane (Rick) Hebert, Julane (taken by the Lord at age 24), Sheila (Dean) Rusch, Holly (Charlie) Lucht, Charles (Elizabeth) and Wendy (Mike) Tolliver. Joyce boasted nine grandchildren: Eric, Sarah, Michael, Anthony, Charlene, William, Cara, Emily and Samuel; ten great grandchildren: Audrey, Caroline, Ethan, Gwyneth, Wyatt, Chloe, Laila, Selene, David and Giada.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, daughter Julane, parents Julie and Alfred Thorson, brothers: Austin, Williard (WWII veteran) and Russell Thorson and sisters: Rose De Long and Gladys Jacobson.
