Ralph Lohr passed away peacefully on January 2, 2022, at 89 1/2 following a long illness. He was born in Schweinfurt, Germany, on May 20, 1932, and immigrated to the United States in 1958 with his then wife Brigitte - they settled in Milwaukee near family. Ralph began his career there as a foreign car mechanic - specializing in Jaguars. His work was also his passion as he loved anything with an engine - cars, airplanes, motorcycles and boats - he loved driving and working on them, watching them in action and later reading about them and discussing new innovations.
Ralph had a keen sense of humor and a sharp wit. He loved spirited conversations and while he sometimes lacked a filter, he was happy to listen to all opinions and typically ended with a laugh. With his signature charm, he made fast-friends wherever he landed and was quick to break the ice with a funny story. A close second to his love of reading, Ralph thoroughly enjoyed good food - Eggs Benedict, bread from Manderfield’s, and anything chocolate were at the very top of his list.
Always a kid at heart, Ralph found joy watching his own kids grow into the people he helped shape them to be. Whether coaching his son’s youth hockey team or traveling to motocross tracks, navigating Lake Winnebago on the family cruiser, reading chapters at bedtime or day trips to Door County, Ralph was endlessly proud of his children and let us know that regularly.
In 1988, Ralph married Cathy and while the marriage ended, the two remained very close with Cathy being Ralph’s dearest friend until his last day.
Ralph is survived by his children - Julie and John Schroeder (Kaukauna), Jeff Lohr (Appleton), Katie Lohr and Shaun Pomerenke (Madison), his beloved granddaughter Zay Lohr (Appleton), former daughter-in-law Deborah Lohr (Greenville), and his former wife and closest friend Cathy Lohr (Appleton). Special mention of Mike and Georgia Pietsch and Marion Goetz who Ralph spoke of often and whose friendship to him meant the world. Ralph was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Menasha.
Ralph’s family would like to thank Dr. Todd Talbot, Joe and the incredible staff at Emerald Ridge of Neenah for creating a true home for him, and the amazing care and compassion our entire family received from Nicole and the staff at Heartland Hospice. The care you gave and the kindness you showed meant more to us than words can say. Thank you all so much.
