Obituary

APPLETON – Shirley Ann Friedman, 96 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. She was born September 15, 1924 in Appleton, WI to Jacob and Rose (Schlimovitz) Golper. After graduating from Appleton High School in 1942 she attended a business college in Milwaukee, where she met her future husband on a blind date. Shirley married Norman Friedman on December 28, 1947. Together they built a home on the south side of Appleton where they raised their two sons. Mark and Rick both have many wonderful memories of growing up in the Cherry Court neighborhood and remain friends with some of the old neighbors to this day.

Once the boys were in school Shirley used her secretarial skills working for many different businesses and organizations. One of her favorite jobs was at her old high school, which by that time had become Appleton West. She was also very active in the Appleton Women’s Club, a stock club, several book clubs and the Moses Montefiore Synagogue Sisterhood. She was especially proud of obtaining lifetime membership in Hadassah in 1977. In her free time Shirley enjoyed playing golf, bridge and mah-jongg. She and Norm also enjoyed traveling and eventually purchased a condo in Deerfield Beach, FL to escape the Wisconsin winters. Following Norm’s death in 1988 she continued to live independently for many years until moving to The Heritage in 2013.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Mark (Julie), Green Bay, WI and Rick (Diana), Los Altos, CA; her grandchildren, Samantha (fiancé Eric Wong) Friedman, Sunnyvale, CA and Joshua Friedman, Los Altos, CA; and nephews David, Sam and Dan Golper. In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Leo and Phyllis Golper, along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Heritage and Peabody Manor for their loving care of Shirley over the last several years, and all the wonderful caregivers from Home Instead (especially Paula) who helped her remain in her own apartment up until the last six weeks. Shirley was laid to rest next to her husband with a graveside service held Friday, May 7, 2021. If you would like to make a donation in her memory, please direct it to: Moses Montefiore Sisterhood, 1620 N. Meade Street, Appleton, WI 54911.
