Obituary

Terry M. Howe, age 87, of Appleton, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 12, 2022, following a long illness.  He was born in Sun Prairie on November 3rd, 1934, to the late Raymond and Alice (Fahrenkopf) Howe.  In 1945, Terry’s family moved from Sun Prairie to Madison, and he graduated with the class of 1952 at Madison East High School.  Terry was active as a plumber apprentice in his family’s plumbing business for several years, during which time he also performed in his own dance bands with his cousin Larry.  Rather than a career in plumbing, Terry attended U. W. Madison graduating in 1959 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.  While in college, he was a member and drum major of the marching and concert bands.  Terry was also a member of the boxing squad, fighting in the Golden Gloves in 1955 where he won the “Fightingest Fighter” award.

After college, he worked as an Industrial Engineer at U.S. Steel in Joliet, IL from ‘59 to ‘65.  He was registered as a professional engineer in both Illinois and Wisconsin.  Terry worked as a management consultant with Management Science Inc, was plant manager with Menasha Corp, staff industrial engineer with American Can Co, and ended his career as a purchasing analyst for Kimberly Clark, retiring in 2002.  He proudly served his country as a member of both the Wisconsin and Illinois National Guard from 1952 to 1962.

Terry enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.  He valued the time spent at his cottage, playing bridge, traveling, being with friends – and he loved Dixieland jazz.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; two daughters:  Tracy Carpenter and Susan Howe; grandsons:  Connor and Gunther Carpenter; and brother, Bruce.  He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; (2) brothers:  Howard and Tim; and (4) sisters in-law:  Joan, Mary, Virginia, and Barbara Mc Dowell.

A funeral service will take place at 11 am on Saturday, June 18th, at the Brettschneider Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel.  Friends may visit at the funeral chapel Saturday from 9:30 am until 10:45 am.  Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Salvation Army and the St. Joseph Food Pantry.

The family would like to recognize Ascension at Home, Compassus Hospice, Senior Helpers of Appleton, and Sharon for their compassion and care.
